Understanding Background Noise in Audio Recording

Background noise is the enemy of clear audio. Whether you're recording a podcast, joining a video call, or streaming, understanding and controlling your noise floor is essential for professional-quality sound.

What is Noise Floor?

The noise floor is the sum of all unwanted signals in your recording environment. It includes electronic noise from your equipment, ambient sounds from your surroundings, and any interference picked up by your microphone.

Measuring Noise Levels

We measure noise using RMS (Root Mean Square) values, which give an average loudness level. A good recording environment should have a noise floor below -50dB. Professional studios aim for -60dB or lower.

Common Noise Sources

  • Fan/AC Noise: Low-frequency hum from computer fans or air conditioning.
  • Keyboard Clicks: Mechanical keyboard sounds picked up by sensitive microphones.
  • Static/Hiss: Electronic interference or poor cable shielding.
  • Ambient Noise: Traffic, voices, or environmental sounds.

Tips for Reducing Background Noise

  • Use a directional microphone that rejects off-axis sound
  • Position your microphone closer to your mouth
  • Use acoustic treatment or record in a carpeted room
  • Turn off fans, AC, and other noisy equipment when recording
  • Use a noise gate or suppression software as a last resort
